On Saturday 21st June from 9.45am to 12pm Pinewoods Conservation Group (PCG) will be holding a charity balsam bash on behalf of Yorkshire Cancer Research. The event will be to raise funds in tribute of Veronica Davenport who was an avid balsam basher and PCG member who sadly passed away from cancer last year.
The day also coincides with Civics Day, a national celebration of civic pride. It is a day when communities across the country say "we care about where we live".
The PCG is therefore encouraging local businesses, schools, youth and voluntary groups to come along, hopefully with sponsorship or donations, to come along and raise much needed funds whilst helping to eradicate Himalayan Balsam. Monies will be collected on the day or can be donated via http://www.justgiving.com/pinewoodsconservationgroup.
Teams or individuals are asked to meet at the Council Nurseries on Nursery Lane, off Harlow Moor Road, Harrogate at 9.45am. There will a prize for the individual and group (max 5 per group) who pull the most amount of balsam.
Himalayan Balsam is a none native plant introduced to Britain by the Victorians in the late 1800s. These plants allow no light onto the ground and as such most of our native wild flowers will cease to exist in these areas. Single plants if left will develop can generate up to 800 new seedlings per yearly.
Eradication of Himalayan Balsam will allow native plants to re colonise and the natural balance of the area will return which in turn will increase insects and wildlife in the area.
