Dig for Victory with Pinewoods Conservation Group

Valley Gardens will once again host a 1940s themed fundraising day organised by and in aid of Friends of Valley Gardens on Sunday 29 June between 11am and 5pm and Pinewoods Conservation Group will be exhibiting in the Sun Pavilion.

This will be the fourth consecutive year this event has been held in the park; with this year the added attraction of a fly past by a Spitfire and Hurricane from the Royal Air Force Memorial Flight in the early afternoon.

The funds raised from 1940s Day will be put towards the Restoration of the Old Magnesia Well Pump Room and surrounding Peat Garden.

More than 35 Vintage and Military vehicles will be on display in addition to many stalls inside the Sun Pavilion with is such as “Harper 40s Hats”, crafts and beauty treatments suppliers and a tombola and cake stall run by the Friends with support from Yorkshire Building Society and Harrogate Mumblers.

At 11.30am there will be a marching band leaving the Main Entrance of Valley Gardens followed by children representing evacuees. All children are welcome, period costume preferred but not essential and gas masks are permitted! Children’s attractions will include Casino Castle’s Bouncy Castle, Action Zone and two donkeys from Leeds Donkey Sanctuary!

Throughout the day there will be live entertainment in the bandstand compared by Major Swing and Kitty. Starting with the Harrogate Phoenix Players, Cherie Lawrence, Yorkshire’s fabulous vintage singer and Echo 42, an 18-piece band will take turns to get the crowd singing and dancing.  The beer tent will be supplied and staffed by Hayles Bar and in another new development, a catering area will offer fish and chips, burgers, pancakes and Chinese food for sale.

The Pump Room will be open throughout the day with volunteers in attendance to relate the history of the beautiful Grade 2 listed building and to explain the work That has been undertaken to return the building and adjacent Rock Garden to its original Victorian design and the addition of a Sensory Garden on site.

Please come and support this event.  It takes 12 months for the Friends of Valley Gardens to organise and raises funds and awareness to transform an extremely important element of Harrogate’s heritage.
